Che cos’è questo libro
A book that opens with an angel and golden plates. The Book of Mormon was first published in 1830 in Palmyra, New York, when Joseph Smith Jr. was twenty four. He said it was a translation of an ancient record, written by prophets in the Americas. Latter-day Saints read it as a second witness for Jesus Christ alongside the Bible. It follows a family that leaves Jerusalem for a new land, and at its center the risen Christ visits the people. Mormon shortened the record, and so the book bears his name.

A book that arrives with a story
Joseph Smith said an angel named Moroni told him of a record engraved on golden plates, buried in a hill near his home. He said he translated it in 1829, mostly with Oliver Cowdery writing as he spoke. The book was printed in March 1830, and the church was organized on April 6.
Statements from eleven men, the Three Witnesses and the Eight Witnesses, say they saw the plates. Most scholars outside the faith read the book as a work of the nineteenth century, shaped by the religious excitement of its place and time. Latter-day Saints reply that its complexity points beyond Smith.
Whichever view you hold, the book is plain about its purpose. It says it was written to convince Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ.

Joseph Smith published it in 1830 and said he translated it from ancient plates. The book names many ancient authors, mainly Nephi, Alma, Mormon and Moroni. Critics regard Smith as its author.
Why is it called the Book of Mormon?

Latter-day Saints believe it is a real ancient history. Most historians and archaeologists see no supporting evidence and treat it as a nineteenth century work of religious literature. Both views are widely held.
