Che cos’è questo libro

What do a bronze ring, a talking cat and a white bear have in common? They all come from The Blue Fairy Book, a gathering of thirty-seven fairy tales edited by the Scottish writer Andrew Lang. He drew them from French, German, Norwegian, Scottish, English and Arabian sources. You meet clever tailors, enchanted beasts, giants, ogres and magic lamps. Some tales end in weddings, and a few end in loss. Many turn on a simple test of kindness, honesty, courage or keeping your word.

Rings, noses and a white bear

The book opens with The Bronze Ring. A gardener's son shares his purse with a beggar woman at a fountain, while his rival, the minister's son, drives her away. She repays the kindness with a plan that wins a ring granting any wish.

Prince Hyacinth turns on a nose. An enchanter's curse gives the prince a nose so huge that it covers half his face, while everyone around him praises it.

In East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a farmer's youngest daughter goes off with a great white bear. A promise and a hidden candle set her on a long road. Kindness is repaid, and flattery is punished.
