Che cos’è questo libro
Tarzan and the Ant Men is an adventure novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, one of the long run of Tarzan books he wrote in the early twentieth century. It sends the ape-man, Lord Greystoke, on a first solo flight in a biplane and drops him into a hidden land that no outsider has ever seen.
The book gives you three stories braided together. One follows Tarzan among a strange pygmy race that rides tiny antelope and builds towering domed cities. A second follows a Spanish impostor, Esteban Miranda, who is chained in a cannibal village and who holds a bag of stolen diamonds. A third waits at home, where Tarzan's family searches for a man who does not come back.
You will meet warring cities, a scheming princess, a vain king and a scientist who can shrink a man. You will also meet a brave slave girl, a loyal prince and a race of silent women who rule by club. Let us begin with the hidden land of the Great Thorn Forest.

A prisoner, a girl and diamonds
The story opens in the filthy hut of Obebe the cannibal, on the banks of the Ugogo river. There Esteban Miranda, a Spaniard who long played at being Tarzan, sits chained by an iron slave collar. He has been a prisoner for a year. The chief wants to eat him, but the witch doctor Khamis insists he is a river devil who must be soothed, so he lives.
Miranda has two comforts. He half believes he really is Tarzan, and he gloats over a bag of diamonds taken from the ape-man by a Russian whom Miranda murdered. Now a third comfort appears, Uhha, the fourteen-year-old daughter of the witch doctor, who has grown curious about the prisoner.
Miranda sees his chance. He whispers to her that he is indeed the river devil and will destroy the village unless one friend sets him free. Frightened, Uhha steals the brass key from the sleeping chief's pouch and unlocks his collar.
He repays her badly. Once outside the gate, he is afraid of the dark jungle, so he seizes the girl and drags her into the night. A lion roars ahead of them, and the escape that looked like a rescue is already a kidnapping.
This opening sets up a thread that runs through the whole book. A trick played on a girl's fear, and a bag of glittering stones, will have consequences far beyond that village.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Tarzan e gli Uomini Formica
What is Tarzan and the Ant Men about?
Tarzan crashes his plane in a hidden land inside the Great Thorn Forest. There he meets silent club-wielding women, tiny warriors on antelope and a scientist who shrinks men, and he must escape while his family searches for him.
Who are the ant men in Tarzan and the Ant Men?
They are the Minunians, a white race of people about eighteen inches tall who live in huge domed cities and ride small antelope called diadets. The name fits their orderly cities, built like ant hills.
Who is Esteban Miranda?
Miranda is a Spanish impostor who has long pretended to be Tarzan. He is chained in a cannibal village at the opening, holds a bag of stolen diamonds and tricks a young girl into helping him escape.
Do I need to read other Tarzan books first?
No. The story stands on its own, with the background about Tarzan, his family and the diamonds explained as it goes. A fast plot and clear characters make it easy to pick up.
What does the book say about civilization?
Burroughs pokes gentle fun at flattery, taxes, vanity and food prejudices, and sets honest jungle ways beside the politics of kings. The Minunian cities mirror human weaknesses at tiny scale.
