Che cos’è questo libro
One weak moment can undo a whole life. Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish writer who died in 1894, knew it well. Tales and Fantasies gathers three of his stories: The Misadventures of John Nicholson, The Body Snatcher, and The Story of a Lie. Each shows an ordinary man made small by a single lapse. One is a comedy of bad luck in Edinburgh. One is a tale of dread in a country inn. One follows a gentle lie that grows. Stevenson tells them in a quick, teasing voice, and he often speaks straight to you.

A Fat Clerk Pawns His Mother's Watch
The first tale opens in Edinburgh with John Nicholson, a stout and cheerful young man who studies law in his father's office. His father is a stern man who lives by a narrow church creed and the gloom of his house. John's loud laughter sounds to him like a weak mind.
John follows Alan Houston, an idle and handsome friend his father has forbidden. One Saturday John is sent to pay four hundred pounds into the bank. On the way, Alan begs a small loan, and John pawns his dead mother's gold watch under a false name. The errand runs late, and the bank is shut.
That night two men rob John on Calton Hill. He confesses everything to his father. Then, in panic, he takes some coins, leaves a note and sets out for California.
