A chi è rivolto
Readers who love legends of dragons, enchanted fire and swordsmen, and listeners who enjoy a story told in a bold, singing voice. It suits anyone curious about the tale behind the Nibelung ring.
Che cos’è questo libro
Siegfried the Hero is a retelling of the old German legend of the dragon slayer from the Rhine. Rudolf Herzog, a German writer who died in 1943, gives it the voice of a tale told aloud, full of horses, storms, sword blows and songs. Each of its six chapters opens with the word How, as if a minstrel were announcing the next scene. In under twenty thousand words you meet the boy of Xanten, the hunchbacked smith, the dragon, the sleeping warrior maiden, the Burgundian court at Worms and the grim one-eyed man who serves it.
The book gives you a hero who loves a fight, laughs in danger and trusts nearly everyone. It also shows you the cost of that trust. A ring carries a curse, a promise is sworn between two men, and a secret is kept from the women who matter most. You come away knowing the shape of a story that German singers, writers and composers have drawn on for centuries. Let us begin where Siegfried begins, in a king's hall on the Lower Rhine, with a boy who cannot sit still.

A restless prince learns the smith's craft
The story opens in Xanten, a dreaming city on the Lower Rhine. There King Siegmund and Queen Siegelinde have a son, and because peace follows their victories, they name him Siegfried. He learns his lessons as if at play, then runs through meadows and forests until he knows the call of every animal. At ten he rides the wildest stallion without reins. At twelve he beats all his father's pages and men-at-arms. At fourteen he slips away to a tournament with his visor closed and knocks proud knights from their saddles with a spear he has carved himself.
Siegfried begs his father to let him go out into the world. The king answers that strength alone cannot subdue enemies, and that a wise mind turns them into friends. The boy thinks it is easy for a gray-bearded man to say so. Then one stormy evening a minstrel sings in the hall of the gold hoard of the dwarf king Nibelung, guarded in a mountain by the dragon Fafner. Siegfried cannot sleep. He runs out into the storm, tears up a young oak and fights whatever the dark forest sends against him.
At dawn he is lost and hungry. From a treetop he spots smoke and finds a smith's hut, where a hunchbacked man named Mime tells him that idlers do not eat. Siegfried takes the hammer and splits the iron bar, and the anvil sinks deep into the ground. When Mime says that Siegfried may now kill him, the boy refuses to strike an unarmed man and treats him with kindness. Mime sees a pure heart and takes him as a pupil.
Years pass in the forest. Mime teaches weapon-craft until Siegfried can face a dozen men, and he gives him a horse named Grane, descended from the Valkyries' steeds, along with a helmet, armor and a sword called Balmung. Then Mime tells the tale of the Nibelung hoard, of his greedy brother Fafner turned into a dragon, and of a cursed ring that Siegfried must bury or throw into the sea. Siegfried promises, kisses his foster father and rides out singing.
