A rancher returns to a stolen ranch

Buck Stratton gets off a little train at Paloma Springs in the heat of September. A fresh scar hides in his hair. He has spent months in a hospital, and one whole year of his life has vanished from his mind.

He bought the Shoe-Bar ranch a week before he enlisted and never saw it again. In the village store, talkative old Pop Daggett tells him that a man named Thorne turned up with a deed claiming Stratton sold the place. Thorne is dead now, and his daughter Mary owns it.

Buck knows no such sale took place. He tells no one who he is, and he rents a horse to see the ranch for himself.
