Che cos’è questo libro

What would you ask for if you thought you were dying at thirty? Julian, a woman who lived shut in a small room beside a church in Norwich, asked to feel Christ's suffering and then lay ill for days. Revelations of Divine Love records fifteen showings she receives one May morning in 1373, a sixteenth on the following night, and her years of reflection afterward. It offers a calm, tender answer to sin and sorrow. First, the woman and the room she lived in.

A woman who lived beside a church

Julian is known as an anchoress, a woman who chose to live enclosed in a small cell attached to a church. The old records place her at St Julian's in Conisford, outside Norwich, and say little else about her life. She never gives her own name or family in the book. She calls herself a simple creature who could not read a letter.

Her enclosed life leaves room for worship and conversation. Such a cell usually had a window onto the church for services, a window to a servant's room, and a window to the street where visitors could speak with her. People came for comfort, and Julian's own words suggest she had the patience of a good listener.

This matters because her book grows from prayer and her need for comfort. Her visions are answers to a need she felt, and she wants to share them as comfort with everyone.

Questions about Rivelazioni dell’amore divino

What is Revelations of Divine Love about?

It records sixteen visions that Julian received while gravely ill in 1373, including visions of Christ's Passion, and her later reflections on them. Its central teaching is that God's love holds everything and that all shall be well.

Who was Julian of Norwich?

She was an anchoress, a woman who lived enclosed in a cell attached to St Julian's church in Norwich. She describes herself as a simple, unlettered creature, and the book gives almost no other personal details.

What does the hazelnut mean in Julian's visions?

Julian sees a tiny round thing in her palm and is told it is everything that is made. It lasts because God made it, loves it and keeps it, which shows how fragile and how cherished creation is.

What does all shall be well mean?

It is the answer Julian hears when she asks why sin exists. She understands that God will in the end make right all that is not right, though she admits she cannot see how.

Why does Julian call Jesus our Mother?

She uses the picture of a mother who bears, feeds and comforts her child to show Christ's tender care. She sees God's wisdom and love working in the way a mother's closeness does.
