Where are you going? That question drives Quo Vadis, a historical novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz, set in Rome under the emperor Nero. Lovers, courtiers and an old fisherman who preaches in the capital of the world all have to answer it. Sienkiewicz builds his story on real people and real events, and adds a love story. Marcus Vinicius, a young officer used to getting what he wants, falls for Lygia, a king's daughter raised in a quiet Roman home. Her faith is one he has never met.

A bored aesthete takes up a lover's cause
The story opens in the bathhouse of Petronius, a rich courtier known as the judge of elegance. His nephew Vinicius arrives from the Parthian war and confesses that he cannot rest. He saw a young woman at a garden fountain in the house of the retired general Aulus Plautius.
She is Lygia, the daughter of a Lygian king, handed to Rome as a hostage and raised by Aulus and his wife Pomponia. Because she is not a slave, Vinicius cannot simply buy her. Petronius is amused and agrees to help.
At the house he expects gloom and finds calm. Pomponia tells him that not Nero but God rules the world, and the skeptic is shaken. Petronius then devises a plan to have Nero claim the girl as a hostage and hand her to Vinicius.
