Mrs. Bennet hears of a rich neighbor

The play opens on a winter day in the drawing room at Longbourn. Mrs. Bennet announces that Netherfield Park has been let to a wealthy unmarried man named Bingley. She has one purpose in life, which is to see her daughters married, and she wants her husband to call on the young man at once.

Mr. Bennet enjoys teasing her. He pretends he will not go, lets her fret about her nerves, and then admits he has already paid the visit. She jumps up and throws her arms around his neck. Behind the comedy sits a real worry. Longbourn is entailed, so after Mr. Bennet dies it will pass to his cousin Mr. Collins, and his wife and daughters could be turned out.

This opening sets the stakes for everything that follows. Marriage here is a matter of money, houses and safety as much as feeling. The listener meets Jane the gentle eldest, Lizzy the clever second daughter, and Lydia the restless youngest, and sees how each will meet the coming visitors.

That’s 1 of 7 key points.

Questions about Orgoglio e pregiudizio: un’opera teatrale

What is Pride and Prejudice: A Play about?

It follows Elizabeth Bennet, her sister Jane and the proud Mr. Darcy in four acts. The story covers a new neighbor at Netherfield, quarrels, proposals and the gossip of a country town in 1796.

Is this play the same as Jane Austen's novel?

It is an adaptation by Mrs. Steele MacKaye, so the plot and the main characters come from Austen's novel. The story is compressed into four acts and four settings, with the conversations at the center.

What do the title words pride and prejudice mean in the play?

Pride is Darcy's belief in his rank and his refusal to defend himself. Prejudice is Elizabeth's habit of judging quickly, especially when a charming officer tells her a sad story.

Who are the main characters in the play?

Elizabeth and Jane Bennet, their mother and father, and the youngest sister Lydia. Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley come from Netherfield, while Mr. Collins, Charlotte Lucas, Wickham and Lady Catherine round out the cast.

Is the play easy to follow?

Yes, the four acts each take place in one setting, and the stage directions in brackets show who is on stage and how each line is said. The brisk dialogue and clear scene changes make the story simple to follow.
