Riassunto di Pierre e Jean
A chi è rivolto
For readers who enjoy close studies of family tension and the mind under pressure, and anyone who loves French fiction about jealousy, secrets and fragile trust.
Che cos’è questo libro
Pierre and Jean is a short novel by Guy de Maupassant, published in 1888. It is set in Le Havre, the busy port on the coast of Normandy, and it follows one ordinary family whose peace breaks over a single piece of news. Maupassant was already known for his short stories. Here he gave a whole book to a quiet household and the thoughts of the people in it.
The book is built around two brothers, Pierre and Jean Roland, who love each other until money and doubt come between them. It gives you a close study of jealousy, of what a mother can hide, and of how a suspicion grows once it takes root. It also gives you a clear picture of middle-class life in a French port town. Maupassant prefaced the novel with a short essay on the art of fiction, and the book itself shows his aim: to show lives as they are, with no big plot machinery. Let us begin on a fine day at sea.

A family at ease on the water
The novel opens on a fishing trip off Le Havre. Old Monsieur Roland, a retired jeweller, has taken his wife Louise, his two sons and a young widow, Madame Rosémilly, out on a small boat called the Perle. The brothers take the oars themselves. Roland loves fishing, and he is proud of his boat, his sons and his small place in the world.
The scene sets up the people we will watch. Roland is simple, talkative and good-hearted, a man who retired to the coast to enjoy himself. His wife is gentle, devoted and a little anxious. Pierre, the elder son, is a doctor, and Jean, the younger, is a lawyer. They are close in age, and on this day they seem close in heart.
Maupassant takes care to show small differences. Pierre is dark, restless and quick to feel slighted. Jean is fair, calm and easy with everyone. People around the family often praise Jean for his good humour, and Pierre notices it more than he lets on.
The trip also introduces Madame Rosémilly, who is young, sensible and comfortable with money. Jean has begun to think of her as a wife. Nothing dramatic happens on the water, yet the calm is the point. Maupassant wants you to see how happy this household is before anything touches it.
When the boat returns to harbour, the story seems to promise only a pleasant summer. A visit to a notary is about to end that promise.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
