A chi è rivolto
For readers who love light, chatty English humour, affectionate teasing of the writing life, and friends debating plot, character and style.
Che cos’è questo libro
Novel Notes is a comic book by Jerome K. Jerome, the English humorist best known for Three Men in a Boat. It first appeared in 1893, a few years after that success. It pretends to be the story of how a novel gets written, and the writing is done by a small group of friends who meet in a smoking room to talk it over.
The book gives you the pleasure of good company and gentle mockery. You watch friends argue over plot, character and style, and you see how an ordinary idea can wander off in every direction at once. Let us begin with the circle of friends and the plan they set out to follow.

Friends gather to plan a novel
The book is built around a circle of friends who spend their evenings together with pipes and talk. The narrator and three of his friends, Brown, Jephson and MacShaughnassy, decide to write a novel together. Their talk is warm, quick and often beside the point.
The friends are given clear habits of speech rather than long histories. They feel like the kind of companions many readers have known, each with strong views and little shyness about sharing them.
From the start the tone is gentle self-mockery. The writer does not present himself as a master of his craft. He presents himself as a man who hopes that a good chat will do the work for him.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.
