Che cos’è questo libro
This is a short moral tale by an unknown author, set in southern Germany in the first half of the nineteenth century. It tells of a watchmaker named Selming, a kind man whom a whole town loves and no one understands, and of Herman, the young man he raises as a son. The author presents the story as a court case drawn from a judge's notebook, and tells it as a lesson in loyalty, conscience and justice.
When Selming is found dead in his bed, everything points to Herman. The story that follows shows how an honest court, working with the tools of its age, can come close to a terrible mistake. It is a short book with a clear line of suspense. In the next few minutes you will hear how the case unfolds, what the judge does and fears, and what Herman is so determined to protect. Let us begin in the quiet town of Verde, where a stranger arrives and starts to do good.

A generous stranger settles in Verde
Selming settles in the small town of Verde in southern Germany. He is a mechanic and watchmaker, and his skill soon makes his name. People respect him even more for his character. He lends money to poor craftsmen who cannot afford their own workshops, and many of them later owe their living to him. Nobody who knocks at his door leaves without help.
Yet the town knows nothing of his past. Curious neighbors press him with questions, but he will not answer, and even his elderly housekeeper stays silent as a fish. In time they give up. Selming lives in a poorly kept house, speaks with no one beyond those who need him, and spends his days at the workbench or with a book. He takes walks outside the town to clear his mind.
On one of these walks he meets a small boy named Herman and grows so fond of him that he takes charge of the boy's future. He gives him a home, sends him to school, clothes him and treats him as a son. Herman answers with good conduct. He learns quickly, works hard and wants only to please the man who rescued him. As he grows, Selming teaches him the watchmaker's trade, and the two work side by side by day and walk together in the evenings.
The bond is close, but one door stays shut. Selming has never told Herman about his earlier life. When Herman once raises the subject, Selming silences him, though he promises that someday, when the young man is older, he will tell the story. After that they never speak of it again. The author takes care to show how much the town loves Selming, so that the shock of what comes next lands hard.
