Three thefts and one spent match
Three guests have lost jewels in under a year, and a third theft has just happened. Sir James begs Hewitt to come at once.
Each theft takes place from a room with a locked door or a fastened window. Mrs Heath loses a rare pearl bracelet, and a burnt match lies near the spot. Mrs Armitage loses a plain brooch while a costlier ring is left alone, and again a used match lies close by.
Hewitt asks odd questions. He wants to know where everyone was on each day, and he poses as an architect so the servants will not guess. He collects small facts before he offers a single theory.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Martin Hewitt, investigatore
What is Martin Hewitt, Investigator about?
It is a set of seven detective tales about Martin Hewitt, a London private inquiry agent.
Who tells the Martin Hewitt stories?
A journalist named Brett tells them. He lives in the same building as Hewitt's office, becomes his friend, goes along on some cases and writes up the others from what Hewitt tells him afterward.
Is Martin Hewitt like Sherlock Holmes?
Hewitt belongs to the same tradition of clue-based detective stories, but he is a stout, friendly, ordinary-looking man who calls his skill common sense. He uses disguises and chats with servants, grooms and cabmen to get his facts.
Can I read the stories separately?
Yes. Each of the seven cases is self-contained, with its own puzzle and solution, so you can read them one at a time in any order. A few small references link them through Hewitt and Brett.
What is the main idea behind Hewitt's method?
Hewitt holds that two or three small details pointing the same way become strong evidence. He combines patient observation with a talent for getting people to talk, and he treats the first obvious explanation with caution.
