A garrison with no guns and a secret
Major Narcisse Vigoureux sits in the neglected garden of the garrison on St. Lide's while Sergeant Archelaus digs in checkered trousers, a gift from the Lord Proprietor. They fit badly. The Commandant is stung, because the gift shows how far the garrison has fallen.
The War Office disbanded the garrison and took its guns five years ago. Through an oversight, the Major and his two sergeants were never retired. His pay still comes, and he fears that telling the truth would ruin the sergeants and starve his dead brother's widow and daughters in London.
