Riassunto di Lucrezia Borgia
A chi è rivolto
For readers who love Renaissance history and biography, and anyone curious about how a bad reputation is built from politics, enemies and rumor.
Che cos’è questo libro
Lucretia Borgia is a biography of the daughter of Pope Alexander the Sixth. It was written by the German historian Ferdinand Gregorovius and first published in 1874. Gregorovius was already known for his long history of the city of Rome in the Middle Ages. He came to Lucretia through the archives of Ferrara, Modena and other Italian cities, where letters, contracts and court reports from her own lifetime still survived.
Her name had long stood for poison, incest and murder. Gregorovius asks a plain question. What do the documents of her own time actually say? You will meet a girl used by her father and brother as a piece in their politics, then a duchess who spent her last years in a northern court. You will also see how a legend grows when enemies write the first accounts. The book gives you a life, and it gives you a lesson in how to weigh a rumor. Let us begin with the family that made her.

Born into a family on the rise
Lucretia was born in 1480 near Rome. Her father was the Spanish cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, and her mother was a Roman woman named Vannozza Cattanei. The family name comes from the Spanish Borja, and the Borgias were outsiders in Italy, which shaped how Romans saw them.
Rodrigo was already powerful in the Church. In 1492 he was elected pope and took the name Alexander the Sixth. Gregorovius shows that this election changed everything for his children. Lucretia, her brothers Cesare and Giovanni, and her younger brother Gioffre were suddenly the family of the pope.
The author describes a girl raised with care. She learned languages, music and good manners, and she was placed for a time under the eye of Adriana de Mila, a relative of the pope. Gregorovius stresses that nothing in the early records shows a wicked child. What they show is a daughter who would be useful.
That word matters in this book. Alexander wanted lasting power for his family in a land of rival princes. A daughter could bring alliances through marriage, and Lucretia was the best card he held. Gregorovius treats her youth as the start of a long pattern in which her own wishes counted for very little.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
