An orphan of the forest meets a new idea

Réné Besson is born in 1775 in the village of Islettes. He loses both parents young and grows up with his uncle Descharmes, a forest keeper in the Forest of Argonne. The forest belongs to the King and is kept for the hunting of court nobles.

As a boy Réné guides the young Duke d'Enghien through the trees and is rewarded with a fine gun. Then a friend of the family, the dragoon Jean Baptiste Drouet, rides up and tells him to keep his carpenter's plane as well. Drouet sends him a book by Rousseau called Emile, which praises the honest independence of the craftsman.

The lesson sinks in. Réné decides he will serve no master, not even a prince. For the listener, this is the seed of the whole story: a boy with two tools, a gun from a duke and a plane from his father, must choose which one defines him.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
