Trama e riassunto di The Vision of Paul
A chi è rivolto
Readers who love visions of heaven and hell, early Christian writing beyond the Bible, and the roots of Dante's imagery, as well as anyone curious about how ancient believers pictured death, judgment and mercy.
Che cos’è questo libro
What if an apostle had toured heaven and hell and left a guidebook? The Vision of Paul, an anonymous Christian text from the late fourth century, fills a silence in Paul's own letter to the Corinthians. There he says he was caught up to the third heaven and heard words no one may repeat. This book imagines what he saw. An angel guides him past dying souls, a golden city ringed by four rivers, and pits of fire and ice. Then Paul does something bold. He pleads for the damned. The story opens with a strange tale of a marble box found under his house.

A marble box under Paul's house
The book opens with its own discovery. In the time of the emperor Theodosius, an angel tells a nobleman of Tarsus to dig under the house that once belonged to Paul. He thinks it is a dream. The angel comes a third time and strikes him, and he digs.
He finds a marble box holding the revelation of Paul and the sandals the apostle wore. A judge finds it sealed with lead and sends it to the emperor, who opens it. Scholars see this as a literary device that gives a late book an old origin.
Then Paul speaks in the first person. The Lord tells him to rebuke the people, because humanity rules creation yet alone sins. Everything that follows is a warning.
