A chi è rivolto

For readers who love early Christian history, visions and parables, and anyone curious about how the first churches handled sin, forgiveness and the daily pull of money and pride.

Che cos’è questo libro

What happens to a believer who sins after baptism, and is there a way back? The Shepherd of Hermas, an early Christian book from Rome written in Greek, circles this one question. Most scholars place it in the first half of the second century. A man who calls himself Hermas tells of visions, commands and parables. An aged woman who stands for the church shows him a tower under construction. A figure dressed as a shepherd, the angel of repentance, teaches him how to live. Some churches read it almost as scripture, and others kept it off their lists.

A Roman believer is charged with sin

Hermas, once sold as a slave to a woman named Rhoda, sees her again in a vision. She tells him she has been taken up to accuse him before God, because of a wish in his heart. Hermas protests that he has done nothing wrong.

Rhoda answers that an evil desire is itself a sin for a righteous man. Then an aged woman appears and says God is angry at Hermas and at his children, whom his softness has let fall.

She does not leave him in despair. If he repents and corrects his household, he will be healed. Judgement is real, but the door to repentance is still open.

Questions about The Shepherd of Hermas

What is the Shepherd of Hermas about?

It is an early Christian work from Rome about repentance after baptism. Through visions, twelve commandments and ten parables, it tells believers to turn from sin, care for the poor and keep faith, while the church is built as a tower.

Why is the Shepherd of Hermas not in the Bible?

Early church lists, such as the Muratorian fragment, judged it too recent and not written by an apostle. It was valued for private reading and teaching new believers, and practice varied on whether it was read aloud in church.

Who is the shepherd in the Shepherd of Hermas?

He is an angel who calls himself the angel of repentance. He comes dressed as a shepherd to live with Hermas and gives him the twelve mandates and the ten similitudes that follow the visions.

When was the Shepherd of Hermas written and in what language?

It was written in Greek, and most scholars place it in the first half of the second century in Rome. Some argue it grew in stages. Early Latin and Ethiopic translations also survive.

What does the tower mean in the Shepherd of Hermas?

The tower is the church, built on water because baptism saves. Its stones are believers, including apostles, bishops, teachers and ordinary Christians. Stones that do not fit stand for those who must repent or are rejected.
