Che cos’è questo libro

What would you do if one line of scripture told you to give away everything? A young Egyptian villager hears exactly that in church, and he takes it at its word. Athanasius, the bishop of Alexandria, writes his life in Greek in the middle of the fourth century. The book spreads far and wide, shapes how saints are remembered, and draws thousands toward the ascetic life. Here you meet the young Antony, his battles with demons, his advice to monks, and his dealings with philosophers and emperors.

A rich young man hears the gospel

Antony is born in Egypt to Christian parents who own a good deal of land. He is a quiet boy who prefers a simple life. When he is about eighteen or twenty, his parents die and leave him a large estate and a younger sister.

One day on his way to church he thinks of how the first followers of Jesus left everything. He enters just as the gospel is read, and he hears that the rich man should sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow.

Antony takes the words as meant for him. He gives away the land, sells his goods, and places his sister with consecrated women. He acts at once, and Athanasius sees this directness as the root of everything that follows.

Questions about The Life of Saint Antony

What is The Life of Saint Antony about?

It tells how Antony, a young Egyptian, gave up his wealth, lived in the desert, fought demons, taught other monks and spoke up for the church's teaching. It is the best-known early account of the monastic life.

Who wrote The Life of Saint Antony and when?

Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, wrote it in Greek shortly after Antony's death, around the years 356 to 360. It was soon translated into Latin and other languages.

Is the Life of Antony a true story?

Antony was a real man and Athanasius knew him. The book is a work of teaching as well as biography, so historians weigh its miracles and speeches with care, though they value it as evidence.

Why is Saint Antony called the father of monasticism?

He was among the first to live in the desert as a hermit and then gather disciples. Athanasius's book made him the model for later monks, though others such as Pachomius shaped communal life.

Is The Life of Saint Antony hard to read?

No. The style is plain and the structure simple, running from youth to old age.
