Riassunto di Papyrus Berolinensis 22220
A chi è rivolto
For readers curious about early Christian writings outside the New Testament, and for anyone who enjoys discovering how ancient texts survive.
Che cos’è questo libro
Papyrus Berolinensis 22220 is the Berlin manuscript that holds the Gospel of the Savior. It is a Christian text from ancient Egypt, written in Coptic, the last stage of the Egyptian language, on pages of papyrus. Only damaged pieces survive. The author is unknown, and the work belongs to the many gospels written in the early centuries of Christianity.
Scholars who have studied it place the original composition in the second century, probably in Greek, though they do not all agree. The surviving copy is much later. In this summary you will meet the manuscript, the shape of the text, the kind of teaching it gives, and the questions scholars still ask. We begin with the papyrus itself.

Punto chiave 1 di 4
A papyrus book that survived in pieces
The manuscript is kept in Berlin, and its catalogue number is the name by which scholars first knew it. It is a codex, which means a book made of folded sheets instead of a scroll. The sheets are badly worn, and many lines are broken or missing. Some pages can be read in part, and others are only scraps.
The language is Coptic, written with Greek letters and a few extra signs for Egyptian sounds. Coptic was the everyday language of Christians in Egypt for many centuries. Copying a text into Coptic shows that it was read and valued there, at least by some community or scribe.
For a long time the pieces were not recognised as one work. Careful study in the late twentieth century showed they belong to a gospel that had no earlier name. Scholars called it the Gospel of the Savior. Because the book is so broken, every reading is partly a matter of judgment, and modern editions mark clearly what is certain and what is guessed.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.

Questions about Papyrus Berolinensis 22220
What is Papyrus Berolinensis 22220?
It is a papyrus manuscript kept in Berlin. It holds fragments of a Coptic gospel now called the Gospel of the Savior, in which Jesus speaks and prays with his disciples before his suffering.
What is the Gospel of the Savior about?
The surviving pages show the Savior in conversation and prayer with his apostles before his death. Because the text is broken, scholars cannot give the full story, only the themes and scenes that remain.
When was the Gospel of the Savior written?
Many scholars place the original, probably in Greek, in the second century. The Coptic copy is later. Scholars do not all agree on the exact dates, and the broken state of the papyrus makes certainty hard.
Why is the Gospel of the Savior not in the Bible?
The New Testament canon formed gradually, favouring texts widely used and linked to the apostles. This gospel was little known and survives in fragments. Nothing suggests it was ever hidden or deliberately suppressed.
Is the Gospel of the Savior hard to read?
No. It is a short read with a clear setting: the Savior talks and prays with his disciples before his suffering. The teaching comes through conversation and prayer, so you simply follow the voices and the prayer at the center.
