Che cos’è questo libro
The Martyrdom of Matthew is an anonymous early Christian narrative about the last mission of Matthew, the tax collector who became one of the twelve apostles. It belongs to the large family of apocryphal acts, which are stories about the apostles written after the age of the New Testament.
Scholars do not agree on its exact date or its author. Most place it among the legendary writings of the early Christian centuries. It gives you a tale of a preacher far from home, of healings and wonders, and of a clash with worldly power. First, let us see where this kind of text comes from.

A later story about an early apostle
The New Testament says little about Matthew after the days of Jesus. The Gospel that bears his name tells how he was called from his tax booth, and Christian tradition long held him to be its author. After that he fades from the record. Later Christians wanted to know what the apostles did next, and they wrote stories to answer.
These stories are called apocryphal acts. These stories tell of apostles who preach, heal and meet opposition. The Martyrdom of Matthew is one of them. Here Matthew comes to Myrna, a city of man-eaters. The introduction also links Matthew's missions with Ethiopia, Persia and the Parthian Empire.
The text survives in Greek, in Latin and in further translations, and the versions differ in their details. That is common for stories of this kind, which were copied, shortened and reshaped by many hands. It is wise to ask which version you hold.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.
