A chi è rivolto

For readers who love Bible stories retold from the other side, tales of magic and pride, and the hidden corners of ancient Jewish and early Christian storytelling, where a single name in scripture opens a whole lost world.

Che cos’è questo libro

Jannes and Mambres is an ancient tale about the two Egyptian magicians who stand against Moses before Pharaoh. The Book of Exodus never gives their names. Paul does, in his second letter to Timothy, as though every reader already knows them. That tells you how widely their story was told.

The full book is lost. It survives in pieces: a Greek papyrus from the third or fourth century, a mention by the church father Origen, an early medieval list of disputed books, and passages in rabbinic writing. Put together, these give a story told from the magicians' side of the contest. You will meet two proud brothers, a king who will not yield, and a question about what wisdom is worth. First, meet the brothers themselves.

Two brothers at the heart of Pharaoh's power

The story opens in the days when Israel groans under bondage in Egypt. Two brothers stand high among Pharaoh's servants. Their names are Jannes and Mambres, and no one in the land can rival them in working signs.

They have grown up in the shadow of power. They know the movements of the stars, the properties of herbs and stones, and the words that compel spirits. Their pride is real, because they earned it through years of study and discipline. When Jannes speaks, other magicians fall silent. When Mambres works a sign, men draw back in awe.

Pharaoh keeps them close, as men who can bend hidden forces to his will. The brothers believe nothing in heaven or earth can overcome what they have mastered. The tale takes care to show them as skilled and sincere, not as frauds. That is what makes the coming contest worth watching, and it is also why their fall will matter.

Questions about Jannes and Mambres

Who were Jannes and Jambres?

They are the names given in later tradition to the Egyptian magicians who opposed Moses before Pharaoh. Exodus mentions the magicians without naming them. Paul names them in his second letter to Timothy, which shows the names were already familiar.

What is the Book of Jannes and Mambres about?

It tells the story of the two magician brothers who copy Moses's first signs, fail before the gnats, and must face what their pride means. It follows their story from their rise at Pharaoh's court to its sorrowful aftermath.

Why is it spelled Mambres in some places and Jambres in others?

Different traditions spell the second name differently. Paul's letter has Jambres, while the Gelasian Decree and this telling use Mambres. Both names point to the same brother, the companion of Jannes.

Is Jannes and Mambres in the Bible?

No. It was never admitted into any canon, though Origen knew of it and Paul alludes to its two figures. It circulated beside the biblical text and survives only in fragments, quotations and later reports.

What is the main message of the story?

The tale asks what skill and learning are worth when they serve the wrong cause. It shows two able men who see the finger of God and still stay loyal to pride, power and habit.
