Che cos’è questo libro
The Falling Asleep of Mary is an anonymous account of the last days of Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is told in the voice of the apostle John, called the Theologian. It survives in many versions, in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Coptic, Ethiopic, Armenian, Georgian and Arabic. Scholars place the earliest written forms between the fourth and sixth centuries, and many think older traditions lie behind them.
The New Testament says nothing about how Mary's life ended. This narrative answers that silence with a scene of prayer, angels, clouds and a gathering of friends. It gives you a quiet, composed Mary who knows what is coming and meets it with blessing. Let us begin with the woman who keeps going to the tomb of her Son.

Mary prays at the tomb and hears an angel
The story opens with Mary walking, as she does each day, to the tomb of her Son. She burns incense there and kneels, asking that Christ will come back to her. Some of the Jews notice her visits and report them to the chief priests. The guards posted at the tomb to keep people from praying there say they have seen nothing, for God has kept her hidden from their eyes.
On the day of preparation the heavens open, and the archangel Gabriel comes down to her. He greets her as the one who gave birth to Christ and tells her that her prayer has risen to heaven and has been accepted. Soon she will leave this world and go to her Son, into true and everlasting life.
Mary goes home to Bethlehem with three virgins who serve her. She asks for a censer and prays aloud. Her request is simple and human. She asks that John be sent to her so that she may be filled with joy at the sight of him. She asks too for all the other apostles, those still living and those already gone to the Lord, so that she can bless his name when she sees them.
