A chi è rivolto
For readers who love early Christian history, students of how the New Testament came to be, and anyone curious about the arguments that shaped the church.
Che cos’è questo libro
The Antitheses of Marcion is a work from the middle of the second century. Its author was Marcion of Sinope, a wealthy shipowner from the Black Sea coast who came to Rome and taught there around the 140s. It does not survive as a whole. Scholars rebuild it from the quotations and summaries of the writers who attacked it, above all Tertullian, who answered Marcion in five books written in Latin, and Epiphanius.
The Antitheses was Marcion's argument that the Law of the Hebrew Scriptures and the Gospel of Jesus could not come from the same God. It set passages side by side to show their conflict. In this summary you will meet its main contrasts, the God it describes, and the way the church answered. First, the question that drives the whole work: how can one God be both just and good?

A lost book known through its enemies
No copy of the Antitheses has come down to us. What we know of it comes from opponents who quoted it in order to refute it. Tertullian, writing in Latin in the early third century, is one of the main witnesses. He worked through Marcion's claims and his edited Gospel.
Because of this, any reconstruction is a careful gathering of pieces. The result gives the main ideas with good confidence. It does not give the exact words or the full layout.
This matters for how you read it. Historians therefore treat the reconstruction as a strong outline, not a verbatim text. Still, the surviving reports and the logic of Marcion's own system give scholars some trust in the outline.
The church called Marcion a heretic and cut him off around 144. His own followers kept the work alive for generations in their own communities. Those communities spread widely and lasted for centuries in several regions.

Questions about The Antitheses of Marcion
What are the Antitheses of Marcion?
They are a lost work of the second century by Marcion of Sinope. It set passages from the Old Testament against the Gospel to argue that the creator God and the Father of Jesus are different beings.
Does the Antitheses of Marcion survive?
Not as a complete text. Scholars reconstruct it from quotations in Tertullian, Epiphanius and other opponents, so the reconstruction gives the main ideas but not the exact words or order.
Who was Marcion?
Marcion was a shipowner from Sinope in Pontus who taught in Rome around the 140s. He rejected the Old Testament, kept an edited Luke and ten Pauline letters, and founded his own churches.
Why was Marcion called a heretic?
Church leaders such as Irenaeus and Tertullian held that one God made the world and sent Christ. Marcion's two gods and his rejection of the Hebrew Scriptures broke with that belief.
Why is it not in the Bible?
It is the work of a teacher whom the early church rejected. The church kept the Hebrew Scriptures and chose its own set of Gospels and letters.
