Love can carry a boy across a frozen country
The book opens with Charan, a gifted dancing girl of Pyong-an, and Keydong, the sixteen-year-old son of the governor. They are close for six years, and then his father's term ends and the family must return to Seoul. Keydong claims he will leave her behind without regret, not yet knowing the pain of parting.
Sent to a monastery to prepare for an examination, he slips out one winter night and walks for a month, begging as he goes. His feet blister and his silk clothes tear. At last he reaches Pyong-an, where Charan's mother turns him away, and he must sweep snow in the governor's courtyard just to catch one glimpse of her.
Charan knows him at once and finds a clever excuse to leave the new governor's son. The two flee to a mountain village, where Charan supports them with her sewing. This first tale sets the tone for the whole book. Faithfulness and quick wits matter, and love is tested by hardship.

What is Korean Folk Tales: Imps, Ghosts and Fairies about?
It is a collection of more than fifty short tales of Korea's past. They cover lovers, clever women, wise and unjust officials, Taoist immortals, foxes, ghosts, goblins and visits to hell. Some offer lessons, while others leave a sense of wonder.
Who wrote these Korean folk tales?
Most are by the scholar Im Bang, with several by Yi Ryuk and a few anonymous. They set down stories told to them by friends and witnesses.
Are the stories true or just legends?
The writers present them as things people told and believed, often naming real kings, ministers and places. Magic and spirits fill many tales, so they read as tradition and folklore more than history.
