A young man learns from old Rocky
The book opens with a boy who leaves a safe home to seek his fortune and finds none. He breaks down in tears on a mountain pass, then walks through a hailstorm and decides to keep going. Later he joins a party of transport riders heading into the Bushveld, the hot lowland below the mountain wall.
There he meets Rocky, a silent old prospector of about sixty with a long Colt revolver. Rocky tells him that blaming bad luck is the habit of a waster, and that a man should find his own mistake and fix it. He takes the young man hunting, teaches him to walk softly, judge distance in bush and watch the wind.
The lesson is that mistakes are the price of learning, and that nobody can be handed experience. Rocky also says that dogs, like boys, must be taught. That thought prepares the ground for Jock, who is about to enter the story.
