Che cos’è questo libro
Hermann and Dorothea is a narrative poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who died in 1832. He set a simple love story inside the wars that followed the French Revolution. The scene is a small, prosperous German town near the Rhine on a hot summer day, when a column of refugees passes by. Over nine short books, each named for a Muse, the poem follows an innkeeper's shy son, his proud and stubborn father, and a young woman who has lost her home but not her courage.
You get a family drama, a courtship and a picture of a world coming apart, all within about one day and one night. Most of the poem is talk. Neighbors argue over old wine, a mother coaxes a secret out of her son, and strangers trade memories of hope and terror. Behind these small scenes stands a large question: what holds people together when kingdoms shake? Let us begin with the day the whole town hurries out to watch the exiles.

A quiet town goes to watch sorrow
The poem opens in the marketplace of a prosperous small town on a hot, clear midday. The innkeeper of the Golden Lion sits on his porch and remarks that the streets are almost empty. Nearly everyone has hurried out to the causeway to see a column of exiles who have crossed the Rhine from the far side. He prefers to stay where he is and send help instead.
His wife, a sharp and kindly housewife, has already sent their son Hermann out with a carriage of food, drink and old linen. She admits that she also gave away her husband's old dressing gown of East Indian chintz, and he takes the loss with a smile. Their talk is homely and full of weather, harvest and fashion. Each detail builds the calm world that the refugees have lost.
The pastor and the doctor arrive, dusty and hot, and the two men disagree about the crowd. The doctor scolds people for gaping at a neighbor's misfortune, since the same fate may strike them next. The pastor defends curiosity as a natural gift that leads people from novelty to usefulness and then to whatever makes them better. Their argument shows two temperaments that return again and again in the poem.
The doctor then describes what he saw on the road. Wagons are piled with sieves, featherbeds, birdcages and goose pens, and one cart has tipped into a ditch, leaving the sick and old groaning in the dust. The innkeeper, moved, leads his friends into the cool back parlor and pours old Rhine wine. He trusts God and the river to protect the town. He also worries aloud that Hermann, capable but shy, avoids young women and the dance.
