Riassunto di Fuente Ovejuna
A chi è rivolto
For readers who love drama built on a clear moral struggle, and for anyone curious about Spain's Golden Age theatre. It is also for those who care about justice, protest and a community finding its voice.
Che cos’è questo libro
Fuente Ovejuna is a play in three acts by Lope de Vega, the Spanish dramatist who wrote hundreds of plays for the public theatres of Madrid. It was probably written in the early 1610s and printed in 1619. Lope took his plot from a real event in 1476, when the people of a small Andalusian village rose against the knight who ruled them. He turned the chronicle into a drama about power, desire and shared courage.
The play moves between a village square, the fields, a battle camp and the court of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. It gives you a tyrant who is easy to hate, a pair of young lovers, a clever peasant jester and a whole community that must decide how far it can be pushed. It also asks a hard question that still matters. What can ordinary people do when the law is on the side of the one who harms them? Let us begin with the village and the man who rules it.

A village ruled by a violent commander
The play opens in Almagro, where Fernán Gómez de Guzmán, the Comendador of the military Order of Calatrava, talks with the Master of the Order, a young man named Rodrigo Téllez Girón. The Comendador is proud, hot-tempered and used to getting what he wants. The talk soon turns to politics, because the Master is thinking of taking the side of the King of Portugal in a dispute over the Castilian crown.
Then the scene shifts to Fuente Ovejuna, a village the Order holds under the Comendador's control. Here we meet the people who matter most. Laurencia is the sharp-tongued daughter of Esteban, one of the village mayors. Pascuala is her friend. Frondoso is a young farmer who loves Laurencia, and Mengo is a shepherd who likes to joke and say what he thinks.
From the first scenes, villagers talk about the Comendador as a danger. He takes what he likes, and he treats the local women as if they were his property. His soldiers and servants, Flores and Ortuño, help him in this and share his scorn for the villagers.
This opening matters because Lope sets two worlds side by side. In one, nobles argue over crowns and loyalties. In the other, farmers argue over love and fairness. The play will show how the first world's habits of command crush the second world's right to live in peace.
