Dracula for A level English Literature

By the Library of Alexandria · 4 minute read · Updated 24 Ott 2026

In short

  • Dracula is a novel by the Irish writer Bram Stoker, published in London in 1897.
  • The story moves from Transylvania to England, where ancient danger enters the modern world of Victorian life.
  • Jonathan Harker travels to help Count Dracula buy a house in England and finds himself a prisoner.
  • A circle of friends must put aside their doubts and work together as sickness spreads through ordinary English life.

The plot in six lines

Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania to help Count Dracula buy property in England, but discovers that his courteous host keeps him prisoner.

In England, Mina Murray worries about Jonathan while Lucy Westenra accepts Arthur Holmwood, and Dr John Seward studies Renfield beside the Count's new property.

The Demeter reaches Whitby during a storm with its captain dead, and Mina later finds Lucy sleepwalking beneath a threatening dark shape.

As Lucy loses blood and grows weaker, Dr John Seward calls Abraham Van Helsing, whose transfusions and garlic challenge familiar medical explanations.

The friends combine their records, practical skills and knowledge of the Count's habits to hunt his boxes of earth across London.

The company pursues the Count toward Transylvania and destroys him near his castle, releasing Mina from his curse, while a later note shows the survivors happy with a son named for them all.

Themes

Knowledge and belief: The friends confront ancient danger by combining modern methods of recording evidence with knowledge drawn from folklore and faith.

Fear of outsiders: The Count's study of English life and purchase of property turn his arrival into a threat of invasion.

Women's roles: Lucy's marriage choices and Mina's practical intelligence reveal tensions between conventional feminine virtues and women's power to act.

Friendship and sacrifice: The friends give blood, share knowledge and face danger together, opposing the Count's habit of taking life from others.

Desire and danger: The frightening beauty of the castle's women and the Count's attraction connect physical desire with vulnerability and danger.

A two-week plan

  1. Day oneRead the 15-minute summary of Dracula from start to finish, then tell the story back to yourself in five sentences.
  2. Day twoA solicitor travels into the mountains: Notice how Jonathan's practical observations contrast with warnings that he does not yet understand. The castle is a beautiful prison: Watch how courtesy conceals captivity, and how unexplained details gradually undermine Jonathan's confidence.
  3. Day threeTwo friends at home, and three suitors: Notice how affectionate letters establish ordinary hopes before the friends understand the danger around them. An asylum beside the house at Carfax: Follow the gap between Seward's precise observations and his inability to explain Renfield's behaviour.
  4. Day fourA storm, a ghost ship and a sleepwalker: Watch how the storm, the ship's log and Lucy's sleepwalking turn a familiar holiday setting threatening.
  5. Day fiveLucy fades and Van Helsing is called: Notice how blood transfusions and garlic place medical practice beside knowledge that Seward initially doubts.
  6. Day sixOld fear against a modern world: Consider how modern tools become useful only when the friends accept evidence beyond their familiar beliefs.
  7. Day sevenFriendship, faith and the duty to fight: Mark the contrast between blood willingly given by friends and blood taken by the Count.
  8. Day eightHow the story is told and why it frightens: Follow how separate documents create suspense by letting readers connect evidence before individual characters can.
  9. Day nineThe cast: Jonathan Harker, Count Dracula, Mina Murray, Lucy Westenra and Dr John Seward. Write one line on what each of them wants.
  10. Day tenThemes: Knowledge and belief; Fear of outsiders; Women's roles; Friendship and sacrifice; Desire and danger. Pick one moment in the story for each.
  11. Day elevenForm: study how the story is told: the narrator, the order of events and the settings.
  12. Day twelvePractice: plan and write an essay on one theme, then read your argument back and test it against the story.
  13. Day thirteenPractice: try a second question with a different focus, such as a character or the form.
  14. Day fourteenRecap: reread your notes and the summary, say the plot out loud once, then rest.

From the boards' published specifications and final summer 2027 timetables, read on 23 October 2026. Ask your school which board and papers you sit.
