A chi è rivolto

For readers who love psychological fiction, short novels you can finish in an evening, and stories about childhood seen from the inside.

Che cos’è questo libro

Burning Secret is a novella by Stefan Zweig, the Austrian writer, first published in 1911 under the German title Brennendes Geheimnis. It is set in a mountain hotel at Semmering, a resort in the Alps not far from Vienna. A bored young baron, a hunter of women, sets his eye on a married guest. To reach her, he befriends her twelve-year-old son.

The book is short, but it holds three people in a tight space and watches what each one hides. The baron plays a game. The mother half knows she is being played. The boy knows nothing and feels everything. Zweig was fascinated by the inner life of people under pressure, and here he gives us a child's mind as closely as an adult's. You get a quiet drama of desire, pride and hurt, told with great attention to small gestures. Let us begin with the baron, who arrives at the hotel looking for a diversion.

A bored baron picks his next target

The story opens at a grand hotel at Semmering, where wealthy guests come for mountain air, rest and company. Among them is a young baron, handsome and idle, who treats love as a sport. He has no money worries and no wish for a lasting bond. What he wants is a fresh conquest each season, and he counts every empty day as a loss.

On this visit he is restless. The dining room offers nothing, the guests seem dull, and he thinks about leaving. Then he notices a woman who has arrived with her young son. She is elegant, clearly married, and used to being admired from a distance without giving anything back. The baron decides at once that she will be his next game.

He does not rush in. He reads the woman as a hunter reads open ground, watching her glances, her manner with the waiter, and the way she crosses a room. He knows that a married woman alone in a hotel is both guarded and lonely, and he thinks he can use both facts.

The first obstacle is the boy. Edgar stays near his mother and watches everything with the sharp eyes of a child who has been ill and spent a long time among adults. A direct approach would fail, and the baron sees that he must go around the child. This cold calculation is where the whole story starts, and it makes the reader uneasy from the first pages.

That’s 1 of 6 key points.
