Riassunto di Betty Zane
A chi è rivolto
For readers who love early American history, frontier adventure and romance, and a fast, clear story. It is also a good first look at Zane Grey.
Che cos’è questo libro
Betty Zane is a novel of the American frontier, written by Zane Grey and published in 1903. It was his first book. Grey wrote it about his own ancestors, the Zane family, who helped settle the town of Wheeling on the Ohio River in what was then western Virginia. He built the story on family tales of a young woman who helped save a log fort during a siege in 1782.
You get a frontier romance and an adventure in one. There is a headstrong girl home from the city, a stranger from Philadelphia who falls for her, a grim scout who trusts no one, and a brother who lives among the Wyandot people. There are also long woods trails, ambushes, and a fort under attack. Grey wrote from the love of wild country that later filled his many Westerns. Let us begin with a young woman coming home to a settlement she hardly knows.

A city girl comes home to the frontier
The story opens in the years of the American Revolution. Betty Zane, the youngest of the Zane family, has spent time in Philadelphia, where she was sent to be educated. Now she returns to Fort Henry, the small stockade at Wheeling, where her brothers and their families live. The place is rough and watchful. Settlers farm by day and keep their rifles near, because raids from across the river are always possible.
Betty is quick, bright and full of fun. She dresses and speaks like a city girl, and the settlers notice. She also has a stubborn will, and she is not shy about using it. Her brother Colonel Ebenezer Zane is a strong figure in the settlement, and the family is known to everyone around.
Grey uses her arrival to show the reader the fort as she sees it. We meet the cabins, the clearing, the blockhouses, and the people who depend on each other. Betty has to learn what the frontier asks of a woman, and the settlers have to learn what she can do.
This opening sets the main question of the book. Is Betty only a charming girl who has come back to play at pioneer life, or is there something harder underneath? Grey keeps that question open for a long time, and the reader keeps watching her to find the answer.
