Che cos’è questo libro
Some men treat booms the way astronomers treat comets. Jim Elkins, a quick-talking insurance man, swears they return on a schedule and that anyone who studies them can start one. Aladdin and Company, by the Iowa writer Herbert Quick, follows the rise of a prairie town called Lattimore. Albert Barslow, a young county treasurer who loses his office, tells the tale. He joins his boyhood friend in a scheme Jim calls a pirate voyage. A banker, a Confederate captain, an editor and a dark financier from New York sign on. Around the money runs a love story, for a farm girl named Josie carries a secret from a night in Chicago.

A delegate follows a stranger's trouble
Albert Barslow is a twenty-three-year-old delegate at his party's convention in Chicago. He finds the speeches dull, because Alice has just agreed to marry him. Looking for quiet, he slips into an art gallery on Michigan Avenue.
Behind a lattice screen he hears a fashionable young man and a girl who is copying a picture. Albert decides she is a Western farm girl with money and a blind hope of becoming an artist. That evening he goes to Auriccio's, a Bohemian restaurant, and watches from a dim corner as the man grows bolder.
After the man draws her close in the palm alcove, she cries out and runs into the street. Albert follows on the streetcar. She springs into the arms of a stout farmer in a slouch hat. Back at his hotel, Albert hears that a man named Elkins has been asking for him.

Questions about Aladino & Co.
What is Aladdin and Company about?
It tells how Albert Barslow joins his friend Jim Elkins in a Western town and helps turn it into a boomtown. Land deals, railroads and a love triangle fill the story, and the friends learn what a boom costs.
Who are Jim Elkins and Albert Barslow?
Albert Barslow is the narrator, a young politician and county treasurer. Jim Elkins is his boyhood friend, an insurance man who believes he can start a boom on purpose and invites Albert to be his partner.
Why is the book called Aladdin and Company?
