Duty hardens into ambition at Delmé
The story opens at Delmé Park, a sprawling mansion home to an old Norman line with only three members left. Sir Henry is the baronet, his brother George is a lieutenant in Malta, and Emily is the youngest.
Sir Henry inherited the title at fifteen and found the estates deep in debt. He paid even debts the law did not demand and cleared the family fortune.
But his wish to restore the family grew into a burning wish to raise it higher. He decides to marry for rank and honors and refuses to hear the softer feelings of the heart. The narrator warns that the heart is like a clear lake, and once it is muddied the lovely image is gone for good.
