À propos de ce livre
In the frozen Canadian north, survival depends on courage, loyalty, and the dogs that carry you through the snow.
George Marsh’s The Whelps of the Wolf takes you into a country of long winters, frozen rivers, forest, and open barrens. Here, the land is more than a backdrop. It shapes the journey and sets the limits of endurance. Hard travel brings danger from weather and from people, while hunger, storms, and distance put courage and loyalty under strain.
At the heart of this adventure is the bond between people and sled dogs. A working team carries people and goods across the snow, making trust a matter of survival. Marsh brings this dependence into a brisk wilderness tale, where the demands of the trail give loyalty its weight. The storytelling is direct, with the outlook of its early twentieth-century setting.

What would you risk for a dog? Jean Marcel, a young French trapper on the East Coast of Hudson Bay, crosses the Cree forbidden country, the haunted valleys of the Windigo, because he wants a sled team more than he fears any demon.

A trapper defies the Windigo's forbidden land
The story opens in spring on the East Coast of Hudson Bay. Jean Marcel stands on a ridge above the Ghost River and sees a lake shining in the north. Beyond it lies the country the Crees will not enter.
His partners, Antoine Beaulieu and Joe Piquet, are horrified. They say the Windigo, a man-eating spirit, will eat him. Marcel shrugs. The plague of the year before killed most of the dogs at Whale River Post, and it killed his parents and his brother. The Huskies of the coast have the best dogs in the north, and he means to reach them before they come south to trade.

What is The Whelps of the Wolf about?
It follows Jean Marcel, a young French trapper on the Hudson Bay coast, who wins a husky puppy named Fleur, chases her thieves, survives a famine winter, and fights to clear his name of murder.
Who is Fleur in The Whelps of the Wolf?
Fleur is a slate-gray-and-white husky with wolf blood, given to Jean Marcel as a puppy by the Esquimo Kovik. She grows into a powerful lead dog and Jean's closest companion.
What does the Windigo mean in the book?
In Cree tradition the Windigo is a man-eating spirit of the northern wilderness. The Crees fear the lands north of the Ghost River, and Jean's willingness to enter them marks his courage and sense.
