What happens when war reaches your farm, and no one comes to protect you?
In Hermann Löns’s The Warwolf, the Thirty Years’ War reaches the scattered farms of the Lüneburg Heath. Soldiers and plunderers take cattle, burn buildings and seize what they need. For farmer Harm Wulf, the struggle is close to home: his family, his neighbors and the ground they live on.
Harm leads the farmers as they answer force with force. Around them lie sandy soil, juniper, heather, birch and pine—a landscape that shapes their lives and their resistance. Told in the manner of an old peasant chronicle, the novel brings war down to the scale of a household trying to survive.

En bref
What would it take to make a man who laughs at everything stop laughing? In The Warwolf, Harm Wulf is a young farmer on the Lüneburg Heath who whistles a silly tune while he plows, adores his wife Rose, and bounces his small son on his knee.

The Wulf family laughs through every century
The book opens long before the war, when the heath is empty and wild. Settlers build lonely farmhouses with painted wooden horse heads on the gable. The Wulf farm sits last, where the marsh begins, with wolves and bears for neighbors. The Wulfs like that, and the wilder things get, the louder they laugh.
Löns tells their history in quick, sly strokes. A Wulf son helps destroy the Roman general Varus, and Wulfs die fighting the armies of Charlemagne. When resistance is hopeless, the heath folk pay rent and accept baptism, but inwardly they stay what they were. The Wulf farm keeps its freedom because of an old charter.

What is The Warwolf about?
It follows Harm Wulf, a farmer on the Lüneburg Heath whose family is destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. He leads neighboring farmers in defending their land, and the novel traces their fighting, their grief and their rebuilding.
What does Warwolf mean in the book?
The Warwolves are a sworn band of farmers who protect villages from marauding soldiers. They mark their work with a wolf hook carved in trees, and their name comes from the Wulf family.
Is The Warwolf based on a true story?
It is a novel, not a documented history. Löns places invented characters in real events of the Thirty Years' War, which lasted from 1618 to 1648 and devastated northern Germany, and published the book in 1910.
