About this book
A wolf outwits every trap, a crow teaches survival, and a wild horse refuses to be caught.
In Wild Animals I Have Known, Ernest Thompson Seton follows creatures with lives, families and characters of their own. Lobo leads his wolf pack across New Mexico, while Silverspot guides a flock near Toronto. Drawing on animals he meets or hears about, Seton brings their watchfulness, cunning and struggle close.
The collection contains eight stories: Lobo, Silverspot, Raggylug, Bingo, The Springfield Fox, The Pacing Mustang, Wully and Redruff. Across prairies, farms and wooded ravines, animals face hunters, enemies and hard winters. Seton asks you to look closely at the hunted, without hiding the dangers they face or the sorrow their stories can hold.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A wolf king outwits every hunter
The first story is Lobo, the King of Currumpaw. In the Currumpaw valley of northern New Mexico, a huge gray wolf called Lobo leads a small pack of five. Ranchers know him by his size and by his deep voice, which carries across the plains at night. The pack kills cattle, and the ranchers want it gone. Seton, a hunter and trapper at this point in his life, accepts a rancher's invitation to try to bring the wolves down.
Seton studies the pack and learns that Lobo does not eat poisoned meat. The old wolf seems to understand what a trap is. He leads his pack around baits that Seton sets with great care, and he sometimes scrapes traps out of the ground. Several wolves stand out by their looks or habits, including a pale female named Blanca.
