About this book
What does it take to hold to your beliefs when the country around you offers few comforts?
In A Voice in the Wilderness, Grace Livingston Hill places a young teacher in the wide, rough country of the American West. Distance, weather and few comforts test her resolve. At the heart of her journey lies a question: how do you turn faith into daily action?
This gentle romance brings Christian belief, courage and love into the same story. Hill makes character matter: steadiness shapes relationships, and respect gives love room to grow. The pull is not toward a fast, violent Western, but toward the quiet strength of someone facing difficulty without surrendering her convictions.

In short
What would you do if the train pulled away without you, in the middle of the Arizona night? Margaret Earle, a minister's daughter on her way to her first teaching job, has to find out.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A teacher is stranded beside a water tank
Margaret Earle steps down from her train, sure she has reached her station. It is only a stop to water the engine, and the cars roll away into the dark. She is left alone on the plain with a bruised knee, a heavy suitcase and the howl of coyotes.
She ties her suitcase to her wrist with her silk sash and climbs the rough spikes of the water tank. From the top she sees a sky of deep blue and huge stars, and she nearly forgets her fear. Then the loneliness comes back, and she calls for help.
