About this book

How do you choose what to believe when proof runs out, but life will not wait?

In The Will to Believe, and Other Essays in Popular Philosophy, William James brings faith, doubt, and choice into everyday reach. These talks and articles ask when hope deserves trust, whether life is worth living, and how much freedom we have. James speaks to ordinary educated readers, with room for disagreement.

The title essay challenges William Kingdon Clifford’s demand for sufficient evidence before belief. Is Life Worth Living? explores a harder personal question, while The Sentiment of Rationality examines feeling’s place in reason. The Dilemma of Determinism and The Moral Philosopher and the Moral Life turn toward freedom and responsibility. Across the collection, ideas matter because people must act.

What you’ll discover

  • Belief under pressure Follow James as he asks when a choice cannot wait for decisive evidence.
  • Reason with feeling Explore his claim that our sense of rationality is partly a feeling.
  • Room for real choice Test his case against rigid determinism, and consider what chance means for freedom.
  • The demands of others Consider an ethics that asks how we respond to what other people need.
  • People who shape history In Great Men and Their Environment, meet James’s challenge to Herbert Spencer’s account of social change.

Who will love it

Readers who enjoy lively lectures, bold arguments and sharp quarrels with famous thinkers will find much here. It suits anyone weighing faith and doubt, or curious about choice, chance and ethics.

Some choices are live, forced, and momentous

James sorts what people are asked to believe. A hypothesis is live or dead only for a particular person. The Mahdi is a live idea to an Arab, but not to James's listeners. So liveness lies in your readiness to act on an idea.

What is The Will to Believe about?

It argues that when a choice is live, forced and momentous, and evidence cannot settle it, a person may rightly let hope and desire decide. James applies this to religion, morals, free choice and the meaning of life.

What is radical empiricism?

It is James's name for his outlook. Even the most certain conclusions about facts are treated as hypotheses open to change by later experience, and the world is taken to be many things, not one fixed unity.

What does live, forced and momentous option mean?

A live option offers two ideas that each tempt you. A forced option has no neutral way out. A momentous option is a rare chance with real stakes. James says a genuine option has all three traits.
