About this book
What does freedom cost when temptation reaches from a dark wood to Eden itself?
The Poetical Works of John Milton brings epic, elegy, sonnets and verse drama together around questions of freedom, faith and loss. At its centre, Paradise Lost follows Satan's rebellion and Adam and Eve's life in Eden. Its unrhymed lines move like spoken argument, making obedience and choice feel urgent rather than distant.
The collection also moves through the joy and thought of early poems, the dark wood of Comus, and the grief of Lycidas. On the Morning of Christ's Nativity imagines Christ's birth silencing pagan gods. Later, Paradise Regained explores temptation, while Samson Agonistes presents a blind hero in captivity. Public conflict and private sorrow meet throughout.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A poet who trained for a lifetime
John Milton was born in London in 1608 and studied at Cambridge. He read Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Italian. Early on he decided to write something that later ages would not willingly let die, and he treated poetry as a calling close to a priest's work.
He skipped the church career his family expected. He read for years at his father's country house and travelled in Italy. Then he came home as trouble grew between king and Parliament, and he wrote prose pamphlets for many years. After 1649 he served the Commonwealth, and by about 1652 he was blind.
