About this book
In the Bavarian highlands, love takes root where a person's word carries weight and the forest shapes a way of life.
In The Hunter of Fall, Ludwig Ganghofer brings you to Fall, a village in Bavaria's Isar valley. Forests and peaks shape the lives of mountain people, foresters and hunters. At the heart of this world stands the hunter, a man whose skill, patience and plain speech bind him to the woods and his village.
Romance grows within a small community where everyone knows everyone, and loyalty gives a person's word its weight. Ganghofer explores these ties through colourful village speech and rich descriptions of nature. The pace is slow and earnest, leaving room to feel the pull of love and the hard beauty of the high woods.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A burning farmhouse marks two children for life
The book opens on a freezing December night in Lenggries. Veri, the young night watchman, spots a patch of melting snow on the Meierhofer roof and raises the alarm. The doors are locked, and by the time they are broken open the house is lost.
Lenzl, a young man of twenty-five, appears at the attic window with his little stepsister Modei in his arms. He will not jump until the priest calls up that his parents are safe outside. It is a kind lie, and when Lenzl learns the truth he shouts at the priest and at God. An old woman leads him and Modei into her warm house. Later he runs back outside, and she finds him unconscious in the snow.
