About this book
What would you save from a fallen civilization—and what would you leave behind?
In The Doomsman, Van Tassel Sutphen imagines a world where civilization has crumbled. Scattered survivors live among fragments of the culture that came before them. A young hero stands between destruction and rebirth, caught between a harsh order and the hope of building something better.
This early science fiction adventure blends romance with questions about how people live together. What holds a society together when its machines, laws, and comforts disappear? Beyond the struggle to survive lies another challenge: deciding which values deserve to endure, and what kind of life can grow from the ruins.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A boy, a book and a spear
The story opens on a yellow beach where Constans, son of Gavan of the Greenwood Keep, sits on a log and stares across the water. He is about seventeen, slender and thoughtful, and he looks at a dark mass on the horizon. In his hand are binoculars with one broken lens, and on his knee lies a child's history of the United States, with his name written across the top of a page.
He compares a picture of lower New York with the shadow on the sea and decides they are one and the same. The Forgotten City and Doom the Forbidden are the same place. Then a spear flashes down behind him and he barely escapes. A man on horseback is waiting further along the track.
