About this book
What if the person who longs for your affection brings harm simply by being near you?
In Florence Marryat’s The Blood of the Vampire, Harriet Brandt leaves Jamaica for Europe, young, newly rich and hungry for affection. Raised by a scientist father, she enters polite society without understanding its manners—or the strange inheritance that shadows her life.
Margaret Pullen offers Harriet friendship, but kindness grows harder as troubling events gather around the girl. Those who love Harriet seem to suffer. Behind this Gothic story lies an unsettling question: how do you judge someone who may be dangerous without ever meaning harm?

In short

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A stranger sits down at the dinner table
The story opens at the Hotel Lion d'Or in Heyst, a Belgian resort, where mostly English guests crowd the long dinner tables. A new arrival takes the empty chair: a tall, supple young woman with narrow dark eyes, red lips and costly lace. She eats with startling hunger, and every woman in the room notices her.
Her name is Harriet Brandt, and she tells Mrs. Margaret Pullen that she has just left a convent after ten years. She is twenty-one, an orphan from Jamaica, and rich. She longs to run along the seafront screaming for joy.
