About this book
In a jungle of hidden gold and false faces, Tarzan has one fierce ally: the lion he raises.
Tarzan, the English lord raised by apes, protects his jungle and his friends with strength and cunning. Beside him stands Jad-bal-ja, a golden lion whose loyalty reaches beyond training. In Edgar Rice Burroughs's adventure, their bond meets a world of pursuit, greed and danger.
Opar draws the story toward a hidden city rich in gold, the remains of an ancient civilization. Its priestess, La, holds a deep devotion to Tarzan. Meanwhile, the cunning outsider Esteban Miranda seeks to turn Tarzan's name and the jungle's riches to his own advantage. When greed wears a false face, loyalty matters more than ever.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A Lion Cub Finds a Foster Father
The story opens with Sabor, a lioness, guarding her last surviving cub. When the scent of a warrior drifts toward her lair, she charges out to protect the little one. The lioness and the man meet in a clearing, and neither walks away.
Tarzan, his wife Jane and their son Korak come upon the orphan sleeping beside his dead mother. The cub snarls and strikes at Tarzan's hand, and the ape-man smiles at such courage. He calms the cub with a low voice, then accepts a nursing dog as a gift from a village chief called Umanga. The family names her Za. It takes endless patience before the frightened dog and the spitting cub accept each other.
