About this book
In a jungle of dangerous animals and hidden peoples, strength alone is not enough.
In Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, Edgar Rice Burroughs brings you into wild country with a hero raised between two worlds. Born to English nobles and brought up among great apes, Tarzan trusts his strength and his wits. Survival demands both, but his loyalty to friends gives him more than himself to protect.
Honor drives this fast-moving adventure. Tarzan protects those who cannot protect themselves and keeps faith with his friends. Around him lies a fictional Africa of wild country, dangerous animals, and hidden peoples. The book also carries the racial and imperial prejudices of its time, making it a revealing encounter with early popular fiction.

In short
Picture a noonday nap on the back of an elephant, and then a gunshot. That is how Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle begins.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Tarzan is captured by Arab slave raiders
A single shot ends a peaceful noon. Tarzan dozes on the back of Tantor the elephant when Fahd, an Arab raider, fires at the gray hide. Tantor bolts, a low branch knocks the ape-man senseless, and he wakes with his wrists tied in strips of camel hide.
The raiders follow Sheik Ibn Jad, who seeks the rumored treasure city of Nimmr. Tarzan faces them with perfect calm, and one Arab, Motlog, who has heard his name in every village, stops Fahd from using a knife. The sheik's brother Tollog suggests a thin knife in the dark and a secret grave, and Ibn Jad approves.
