About this book
What can a lost gospel reveal when only scattered quotations remain?
The Gospel of the Hebrews survives only in short passages preserved by early Christian writers, including Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Eusebius and Jerome. No complete copy remains. These fragments offer glimpses of teachings attributed to Jesus and of Jewish believers who follow him while keeping the Law of Moses.
Here, you encounter a Holy Spirit described as a mother, a woman accused of many sins, and an appearance of the risen Lord to his brother James. Alongside these passages, you explore how scholars distinguish this gospel from others with similar names—and how much care it takes to read a book preserved only in scraps.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A gospel known only through quotations
The Gospel of the Hebrews has not come down to us as a book. Its text is gone, and what we have are short extracts and comments in the works of Church writers. They quote it in Greek and Latin, and they treat it with respect, even when they do not count it among the main four gospels.
Clement of Alexandria and Origen are among the writers who preserve its fragments. Eusebius of Caesarea listed the gospel among the books that some accepted and others doubted. Jerome cites it several times.
