About this book
What does Bartholomew dare to ask when the risen Christ stands before him?
The Gospel of Bartholomew, also called the Questions of Bartholomew, presents a conversation about things no one has seen. Set after the resurrection, it follows the apostle and other disciples as they question Jesus about the realm of the dead, his birth, and the adversary. Each question opens onto a scene rather than another chapter in a life of Jesus.
In this ancient Christian text, Bartholomew asks what happens when Jesus descends into Hades. He also asks to see the devil. According to the narrative, Jesus warns him before the adversary appears in bonds. Written by an unknown author under Bartholomew's name, this work stands outside the New Testament and explores early Christian ideas about heaven, temptation, and evil.

An anonymous dialogue set after the resurrection
The Gospel of Bartholomew is a short early Christian work with no named author. Its title comes from the apostle who asks most of its questions. Scholars call the work an apocryphon, a word that points to hidden or set aside writings.
The text survives in Greek, Latin and Slavonic versions, with Coptic fragments from Egypt. Each differs in order and in detail. Most scholars place its beginnings in the early centuries, often the third, but that dating is debated.

The author is unknown. Scholars usually date its roots to the early centuries of the church, often the third, but they disagree. It survives in Greek, Latin, Slavonic and Coptic versions that differ from one another.
