About this book
What happens when a prophet’s warning meets a hostile throne—and his vision reaches beyond the world?
The Ascension of Isaiah joins a story of persecution to a vision of heaven. In its earthly account, Isaiah warns that the reign after Hezekiah will bring corruption and danger. Hezekiah’s son Manasseh represents a turn toward hostility, placing the prophet’s teaching and steadfast faith under threat.
In the visionary account, an angel guides Isaiah through seven heavens, each more glorious than the last. According to the text, he witnesses heavenly worship and receives visions of Christ’s descent into the human world. Earthly rulers, hostile spirits, and warnings about failing faith connect these heavenly scenes to religious communities under pressure.

A layered work that survives in many languages
The Ascension of Isaiah recounts the prophet's suffering under a wicked king, then relates his earlier journey through the heavens. It does not survive whole in its original language. The Ethiopic version is the fullest, and there are also Latin and Slavonic versions and fragments in Greek and Coptic.
Most scholars see the book as a composite. It seems to join an older Jewish tale of the prophet's death under Manasseh with a later vision of the seven heavens. The martyrdom comes first, in chapters one to five, and the vision follows in chapters six to eleven.

What is the Ascension of Isaiah about?
It tells how the prophet Isaiah is persecuted under the wicked King Manasseh. It then describes his vision, in which an angel guides him through seven heavens and shows him the Beloved, who will descend to the world in disguise.
Who are Beliar and the Beloved in the Ascension of Isaiah?
Beliar, also called Sammael or Satan, is the evil ruler of this world who works through Manasseh. The Beloved is the heavenly Son in the seventh heaven, whom the text names as the Lord Christ, called Jesus in the world.
When was the Ascension of Isaiah written?
Most scholars place the finished work in the late first or early second century of the Common Era. It seems to use older Jewish sources about Isaiah's death, and scholars still debate how the parts were joined.
