The account tells of forty-nine Christians arrested in Abitina in 304 for worship and keeping holy books. Saturninus, their priest, stands among them as they face questioning over the gathering they refuse to give up.

The story moves from a private house to the court of Anulinus, the proconsul at Carthage. There, a senator named Dativus and other prisoners must answer for their choices. This anonymous Latin account places their words at its heart, exploring why worship, scripture and belonging matter more to them than safety under imperial rule.

What you'll discover

A house under scrutiny – Enter the gathering at Emeritus’s home, where ordinary worship carries the threat of arrest.

Faith before Roman authority – Follow the questioning before Anulinus as imperial demands meet the prisoners’ stated convictions.

Distinct voices under pressure – Meet Saturninus, Dativus and their companions through answers that differ in tone.

The meaning of Sunday – Explore why, according to the account, a weekly assembly cannot simply be abandoned.

A community’s remembered courage – Discover an account preserved by the Donatists as an ideal of Christian faithfulness.

Perfect for readers of early church history, Roman provincial life and North African Christianity, and anyone drawn to stories of conscience under pressure.

Open the first page and follow this community from a Sunday gathering to the questions that test its convictions.
