About this book
What might heaven reveal about the world below—and the way a person should live?
In 2 Enoch, the patriarch from Genesis leaves his home under the guidance of two luminous angels. According to the text, they carry him through heavens filled with wonders and terrors: storehouses of snow, angelic guardians, prisons of fallen angels, and paradise reserved for the righteous.
This ancient Jewish text, written by an unknown author in Enoch’s name, brings cosmic mysteries beside questions of human conduct. Its account explores creation, judgment, and the duties of the soul. Preserved in Slavonic, it also offers a glimpse into mystical traditions that shape early Jewish and Christian thought.

A Slavonic text with Greek and Jewish roots
2 Enoch is one of several ancient books that grew around Enoch, the seventh patriarch from Adam. Genesis says only that he walked with God and was taken. Writers of the Second Temple period asked what happened next, and this book is one answer. It is separate from the Ethiopic 1 Enoch and from the later 3 Enoch.
The book survives mainly in Old Church Slavonic, in medieval manuscripts that come in a shorter and a longer form. Scholars debate which form keeps more of the original. Most think the core was written in Greek, perhaps in Alexandria, and many place it in the first century CE. Others argue for different dates. English readers first met it in 1896.

What is 2 Enoch about?
It tells how Enoch, the seventh patriarch from Adam, is taken up through seven heavens, sees angels, paradise and places of punishment, hears God describe creation, and returns to teach his sons before he is taken for good.
Why is 2 Enoch not in the Bible?
It was never part of the lists of scripture that Jewish communities and the major churches fixed. It survived mainly in Slavonic manuscripts, so most Bibles do not include it. Scholars treat it as an important Second Temple era text.
When was 2 Enoch written and in what language?
The oldest surviving manuscripts are Old Church Slavonic from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Most scholars think the core was composed in Greek, probably in the first century CE, though some propose other dates and the question stays debated.
