About this book
Joining the ranks is only the beginning; learning to stand firm beside your comrades is the real test.
In Uncle Sam's Boys in the Ranks, H. Irving Hancock follows two young recruits into the United States Army. They begin to learn what military life asks of them: discipline, loyalty and the nerve to face a test. Enlisting opens the door, but service demands more than the decision to join.
Drill, orders and routine shape the world these recruits enter. Civilian habits must change, and friendship becomes part of learning to serve. This old-fashioned adventure places courage beside duty, asking what it takes to do the right thing when the choice is hard and comrades depend on one another.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Respect for the uniform starts on a street corner
The book opens with an argument outside a post office. Bunny Hepburn says soldiers are loafers. Jud Jeffers, whose father served in the war with Spain, says soldiers are the salt of the earth.
When Bunny spits at the poster, Jud knocks him down. Two older boys cross the street to stop the fight. They are Hal Overton and Noll Terry, and they agree that Jud is right to defend the uniform.
